So many of us think about the gap and all of our failures. Well, you need to spin it. Set your goals in relation to where you were compared to where you want to be. When you’re looking for progress in that way, you’re in the gain.

On this week’s episode of The Art of Passive Income, Mark and Scott welcome housing advocate and marketing director Ryan O’Connell to the show.

Ryan O’Connell is the founder of How To ADU and an advocate for more housing in California. He moved to Napa, California in 2012 to start nakedwines.com which is now one of the twenty largest wineries in the United States. In traveling all over California’s beautiful wine regions, Ryan had too many occasions to meet vineyard workers, winery teams, and hospitality staff that cannot afford to live in the regions where they work. 

While grateful for the success and growth of California’s wine country, Ryan also saw a fundamental problem pushing people out of their communities or driving them to spend far more than a third of their income on housing. Revisiting his political science background, where he holds a B.A. from Tulane University), Ryan set out to explain Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) to California homeowners. He wants to create simple ways for homeowners to reduce California’s housing shortage, in a way that benefits them and their communities.

On this week’s episode of The Art of Passive Income, Mark welcomes Real Estate Investors Jason and Clint Spearow from Spearow Land to the show.

Jason and Clint Spearow are two of our Flight School Graduates who are doing very well with their land investing business. They are the owner of Spearow Land, a family-owned and operated company located in Sugar Land, Texas. Growing up on a ranch, Jason and Clint have always had a passion for land. Jason began his land investing journey after stumbling across one of Mark’s podcast videos where he purchased the Land Investing Tool Kit. He later invited Clint to attend one of the Land Geek Bootcamps that was held in Las Vegas. There, they acquired sufficient knowledge about land investing, and soon after, they were both enrolled in Flight School. 

With knowledge of how valuable land investing can be, Jason and Clint started selling lands in 2016. Since then, they have sold approximately 120 properties valuing over 3.2 million dollars. Today, they continue to enjoy their passion as they strive to provide customers with properties they will love and enjoy for generations to come.

Jerome: One of my favorite books is by Scott Alexander called Rhinoceros Success, it’s a book I read over 25 years ago. What I like about Scott Alexander is he’s very straightforward, straight to the point —real blunt. He talks about the difference between being a rhino or being a cow, and he compares it today, he uses that as an analogy. But then, he also talks a lot about faith, and I think the biggest takeaway from everything is, without faith you can’t get anything done in life. It really is through the means of faith that keeps me going. Without faith, you can’t level success to where you get to without it.

Scott: Sometimes we just need a quick resource to go and check things out whether it’s a quote of the day or site of the day, check out this website called The Reference’s Desk (refdesk.com). What’s cool is they have a site of the day, like a fun fact, thought of the day, a book of the month. 

Joe: The book that I used as an entrepreneur, that helped me through all sorts of issues was Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. The big lesson in that is writing down your goals and reviewing those goals on a regular basis. That’s my secret that’s not a secret to success in entrepreneurship: I write down my goals, I have 5 or 6 main goals for every year that I look at and review them every day. And when you review them in the morning, you do different things based on those goals. This new book, I was surprised because I had low expectations on this book, it’s Greenlights by Mathew McConaughey. I really thought it’s not a good book, but I read it, he wrote down his goals on a regular basis and review them. Great lessons and I learned a lot about myself reading that book. The real focus on that is goal setting and goal reading.
